Woodstock at Jimi Hendrix ....

I've just watched the excelent 'Woodstock, 3 days of peace and music' film. Voted a full 10 merit points from the bleech household.

The footage of 1.5 million mashed flower children, as far as the eye can see are breathtaking...

On the last day Mr Hendrix played his set. Including a brilliantly lucid rendition of purple haze where Jimi's big hands make mincemeat of all the poor musicians that have graced that stage over the weekend. Mutating from the inceduary reading of the Star Spangeled banner, (in the clip) take notice of the mid part where Jimi seems to lose the plot and go pretty much random, close your eyes and suddenly you are hearing jets flying over the jungle in vietnam, dropping napalm and scattering bombs...really its uncanny.

During this clip the camera pans the the crowd (in the first 15 secs) ... HUH? there's like 10,000 poeple max. Footage from earlier in the festival shows a sea of people stretching off to the horizon, now its 100m and then back from that its just a mess of blankets, odd shoes, clothes and related fesival crap (literally). The food shortages and lack of water had caused a massive exodus the evening before and then on through the day Jimi played.

So those lucky hardcore woodstock survivers really are the cat that got the cream. It can't have done Jimi's fragile and constant self doubt any good though. While Jimi's set was inspired theres no sign of his beautiful smile or the massive physical energy he put into his more dynamic shows elsewhere.

I can't help imagining what his set would have been like, if he was on stage the day before in the sunshine with 1.5 million people in front of him ready and waiting in the palm of Jimi's big, big hands. As in my veiw there is no one else who was more 'of a time' than the unsurpassed Mr Hendrix. Now that, would have been truly legendary ....
